White letter tires are popular not only for off-road vehicles but also for SUVs in recent years.

Among them, “BF GOODRICH” is the one that most people think of when they hear the word “white letter”.

Many people would like to install white letter tires or have installed them at least once because of the cool image of old XC cars, American cars, etc.

Recently, they are also seen on many SUVs.

However, when they become very popular, they often become tired of the trend.

Among experts, there has been an increase in the number of people who dare to install white letter tires on wheels with the back side as a hassle (hereinafter referred to as “back-facing”) for quite some time now.

The number of people who do this has been increasing.

In the case of the landcruiser70, which now has many minor-oriented owners, the majority of them seem to be using “back-facing”.

So, this time, if you have installed white letter tires because you admired them, but you are still tired of them, or if black lettering looks cool, is there a way to be erazed the white lettering?

I have been looking for a way to be erazed the white lettering.

Is there any way to be erazed the white letter?

The first method that comes to mind is to remove it by scraping or polishing.

Since most of the tire is black and only the letters are white, it is natural to think that this white paint (assuming it is white paint) should be removed.

I myself have thought so and tried various methods such as wiping with thinner and scrubbing with parts cleaner (the type that does not damage rubber).

However, it only cleaned the white lettering and rather had the opposite effect.

In the end, it did not come off at all.

I wondered why, but recently I had a chance to cut up a tire, and when I looked at the cross section of the rubber, it was obvious at a glance.

First, if you cut the black letter side of a BF Goodrich white letter tire, it has this kind of cross-section.

It is ordinary black rubber, and what appears white at the bottom is a thin, interwoven string.

And if you cut the white letter side the same way …

About half of the surface side of the rubber is made entirely of white rubber.

And if you cut the white letter part, it looks like the second picture.

In other words, the white is not paint, but the tire rubber itself, with only the lettering raised from the inside.

This is exactly a raised white letter.

No matter how much you scrape or scrape from the surface, it will never go away.

Is there any way to paint white letters black?

That being the case, I now wanted to paint the white letters black.

On the other hand, there are various pens available to turn black lettering into white lettering.

I thought it would not be so difficult to paint black then.

Unfortunately, I have not found any products for blacklettering, as there is no need. I have, however, tried blacklettering by painting.

As it turns out it was quite difficult.

The material rubber is very difficult to paint in the first place. Also, the surface of the tire expands and contracts more than I would have liked and the paint is prone to cracking.

Hand-applied black chipping paint.

At the very least, the tires should be mounted on the car and painted with the necessary amount of air.

Also, because the white lettering is sticking out, if the car hits something, the paint will peel off first, revealing a glimpse of the white, which will gradually become a disgrace. This is especially likely to happen to those who drive off the road.

Even if you decide to change back to white because some of the paint has peeled off, it will be difficult to do so again.

A situation where I attempted to peel it off and gave up because it was partially peeling off.

Depending on your painting skills, you may be able to do it well, but it was quite difficult with my skills. Also, it is not worth the effort, so I do not recommend this work.

Summary

In the end, my own conclusion is that white lettering cannot be erased or painted (difficult).

Of course, it is not too late to try. However, I think it is better to honestly remove the tire once and reattach it with the back side.
